Dynasty Recap

There was a week to go before their AL only fantasy league draft and suddenly it was found out they had a team without an owner. A high school friend posted on facebook the need to fill the owner and so I sold some Lewis Black black tickets and bought in. The team info was sent to me, II was told I could keep 11 guys and their total would be taken off my 260 auction total. Then Sunday night we would do the remainder of the auction via conference call.

My 11 keepers were as follows, the holes in the lineup were the positions I needed to fill in the auction. No reserves could be bid on, they were selected in a post auction snake draft.

So I was with only 85 dollars to play with, but felt my core was extremely strong. I knew I wouldn’t be able to be in on any of the big names, but felt if I timed it right I could steal some very good pieces at very good prices.

The first 8 guys were nominated (Albert Pujos 69, Anibel Sanchez 19, Jose Reyes 49, Aaron Hicks 11, Jed Lowrie 7, R.A. Dickey 25, Will Middlebrooks 20, and Chris Sale 26) all went off the  board and I didn’t bid on one of them. The only one I considered was Lowrie, but that early I didn’t want to commit any of my precious remaining dollars on an injury prone middle infielder. My philosophy proved to be flexible in the end. I nominated Michael Bourne next and bid him up until 19ish and he ended up going for 29. I liked him, but didn’t want to pay that much for a speed specific guy.

Before my next nomination there were 4 players who went for prices that were, in my opinion, absolutely insane. Derek Jeter went for 15, can he earn that when he is healthy? Sure, but I don’t know how likely it is. Kevin Youkilis went from 21, I don’t think that is totally crazy, but he has been worse at the plate and hurt more when playing third base, where he will play for the Yankees. Nick Swisher for 31. I thought I could get him in the 17 range. I misread that terribly. and he changed offenses from a good one with the Yankees to a bad one with the Indians. That won’t help. The last one was Ben Zobrist for 46. Way too much for a guy whose 3 year trend has been downward and even if you put him at a middle infield slot there were still plenty of other middle infielders available. Put it this way Ben Zobrist was the second highest paid player in this auction. I think there is about a 4% chance that Zobrist will earn that price this season.

I started to bid on middle infielders (Jose Altuve 22, and JJ Hardy 17), but didn’t get either of them as I got scared to spend a quarter of my budget either of those 2. I then stole from the rest of the league when I picked up my first guy, Nelson Cruz. I got Cruz, the last pure power guy in the draft, for 22. I almost felt bad, but its about winning and I intend on winning.

Jake Peavy went for 22 and I was in on him, but bailed and ended up getting Justin Masterson for 6. I think in the end they put up similar stats, with Peavy having far greater upside. Jhonny Peralta came up for auction and I got him 11, probably 2 dollars too many, but I was at the point where I needed to secure at least 1 middle infielder. Then Howie Kendrick went for 15 and I bailed on him because I has just spent the 11 on Peralta.

Then Mike Morse went for 20. Not to me, that is just hysterical.

I decided to get creative with my last 2 middle infield spots. There was not a lot of security on the board so I took oft injured Brian Roberts for 1 and platoon player Kelly Johnson for 7. If Roberts plays 2 months he will earn far more than a dollar, but I need a backup for sure. I think that Kelly Johnson is a Joe Maddon type of player and will become far more than a platoon option for the Rays. I’ll be honest both of those moves could backfire horribly and blow up my middle infield.

I rounded out my pitching staff with Ryan Dempster for 11, A.J. Griffin for 7, Jeff Neimann for 3 and Wei-Yen Chen for 1. I was amazed I didn’t need to spend any more on any of those guys. I was prepared to spread the 17 I had left over those 4 spots. And as any good auction guy says ‘if I knew I only needed’ 22 for those 4 guys I’d have gone and gotten Jose Altuve earlier. But that is  the beauty, challenge and for me the fun of the auction. It was a great time, I can’t wait for my next one Saturday!
