2014 AL East First Base Preview

bos_g_springts_600x400Hello folks baseball is back in Spring Training and it is time to start grading out the AL East. I’m only doing the AL East to assess where I think the Red Sox sit in their division. We are going to do this fairly scientifically. I’m going to grade each player, at each starting position. The team with the best player at the position gets 5 points, 2nd 4 points etc. Get it? Good, if not go away. Each position gets 2 lists, purely statistical and purely sleeveless. At the end the team with the most points from both lists will be the scientific favorite to win the AL East. Then I’ll wrap it all up and tell if I agree or disagree with science or if I’ll have my own sleeveless prediction.

February 24th, we did catchers!

Today, February 25th, we do first basemen!

SLEEVELESS ANALYSIS

1. Edwin Encarnacion – Blue Jays

He doesn’t benefit from Bautista being in the lineup anymore, Bautista benefits from him.

2. Chris Davis – Orioles

His numbers were way down in the second half of 2013. Makes me nervous.

3. Mike Napoli – Red Sox

Now that he got paid and has a ring, what’s he got?

4. James Loney – Rays

Were his 2013 run production numbers real? The Rays think so. I don’t know if I do.

5. Mark Teixeira – Yankees

I think the Yankees move Beltran to 1B by the 4th of July.

SUMMARY

My overall impression is that The Blue Jays have a clear advantage at first base sAs Encarnacion has emerged as a player they can build their lineup around. The Orioles are hoping that Davis can repeat his amazing insane 2013, but based on his 2nd half splits I am not too sure. The Red Sox paid Napoli and I wonder if the motivation is there to continue to do be the run producer he has been the last 3-4 years. The Rays need Loney to be at least the run producer he was in 2013 if not a touch better to help compensate for some of the places they are weak in their lineup. I think Teixeira is likely done and that the Yankees will find a way to “politely” put him on the disabled list and that he will retire under the radar after the season.
