2014 AL East Set Up Men Preview

bos_g_springts_600x400Hello folks baseball is back in Spring Training and it is time to start grading out the AL East. I’m only doing the AL East to assess where I think the Red Sox sit in their division. We are going to do this fairly scientifically. I’m going to grade each player, at each starting position. The team with the best player at the position gets 5 points, 2nd 4 points etc. Get it? Good, if not go away. Each position gets 2 lists, purely statistical and purely sleeveless. At the end the team with the most points from both lists will be the scientific favorite to win the AL East. Then I’ll wrap it all up and tell if I agree or disagree with science or if I’ll have my own sleeveless prediction.

February 24th, we did catchers! February 25th, we did first basemen! February 26th, we did second basemen! , February 27th, we did third basemen! February 28th, we did shortstops! March 1st we did left fielders! March 2, we did center fielders! March 3, we did right fielders! March 4, we did designated hitters! March 5, we did starting pitcher #1s! March 6, we did starting pitcher #2s! March 7, we did starting pitcher #3s! Yesterday, March 8, we did starting pitcher 4’s! Yesterday, March 9, we did starting pitcher #5’s!

Today, March 10, we do setup pitchers!

SLEEVELESS ANALYSIS

1. Sergio Santos – Blue Jays

Was once an effective closer, could be again.

2. Joel Peralta -Rays

Very good 8th inning guy for years now.

3. Junichi Tazawa – Red Sox

His role is well defined, he will never be a closer, but is dominate in the 8th innings.

4. Darren O’Day – Orioles

Very little to do to improve on 2013. Could close in Baltimore if situation continues as murky.

5. Dellin Betances – Yankees

Key part of Yankees attempts to rebuild their bullpen after departure of Rivera.

SUMMARY

My overall impression of AL East setup men is that again the Blue Jays are in the drivers seat because Sergio Santos is a very good relief pitcher and formerly their closer, only losing the job after an extended injury. He returned, accepted his role and pitched extremely well. Junichi Tazawa with the Red Sox is solid, but towards the end of the year his effectiveness began to slip. Was this because of the amount of tape teams were able to watch on him, or just normal firt full year in the bigs fatigue? 2014 should tell us. Joel Peralta is your classic, once thought of as a closer, had a nice career as a setup man. I haven’t liked side-armers since I had to watch Byung-hyun Kim regularly, so sorry Darren O’Day I don’t believe in you. Dellin Betances with the Yankees is a mystery, he could be very good, he could be another Yankee prospect bust ala Joba Chamberlain.
